When Worlds Collide...

Rottenator: I can't believe you're missing the first day of football because of a stupid convention.

Me: It's not a stupid convention; it's DragonCon; it's a chance for me to reconnect with my peeps and indulge my inner geek.

Rottenator: I can't believe (bro-in-law) is going; he's going to miss his first game of the season too. Against Clemson...pretty important.

Me: He's not missing it; he's ditching us for the night so he can watch his game.

Rottenator: Don't blame him; probably he wouldn't be going at all if (nephew) didn't want to go; otherwise, he'd let you two nerds (me, and sis) fend for yourselves.

Me:  Touché...asshole...

DRAGONCON!

My Mood(Ring) Tone of the Day:

I'm feeling very British and literary today...

Geekology

So, a week from today, I will be amongst my peeps, for it is the weekend of DragonCon, and I am so looking forward to it (even though it means I will miss the opening game of college football, Alabama vs VA Tech, we have that shit handled, so don't give me a guilt trip about not watching it with you, Rottenator, Roll Tide..etc).

And here's the question, which I ask of all Dr. Who fans: how do you get past it? That your favorite actor has been replaced? Oh, don't get me wrong, the concept as far as network television goes, it's brilliant.  You can replace a lead actor at any time if they get out of line, or are feeling ornery, or wanting to bounce, or whatever,  you just boom! Regenerate and then you're on to the next one.

But for the fans...devastating. Let me explain:  David Tennant is my favorite Dr. Who, but when Christopher Eccelston regenerated into him....

A part of me died.  Just saying.

Though it wasn't as devastating as this:

Moving on, I've combined two posts into one because they do seem to connect somehow and have the same meaning, and are funnily enough, all Dr. Who related...did I mention that I'm looking forward to next weekend?  Not only do I get to hang out with my sis and favorite nephew, but we all get to embrace our inner geek, yay!

So, work crap:

What you may see in front of you is a mild-mannered nearly 42 year old who doesn't speak much....inserts her opinion every once in a while when a comment is deserved,  but other than that, sits quietly at her desk doing her job.  But inside....sometimes....she still rages....raging on against the dying of the light.

Funnily enough, Stephen Colbert inspired this part of the post.

http://popwatch.ew.com/2013/08/07/stephen-colbert-daft-punk-get-lucky-dancing-video/

And it was also spurred on by everyone in my team talking about past indiscretions, and my need to feel a part of the group and join in the conversation, because it's funny, these people don't know me like that.

Their perception: middle aged woman who doesn't know shit about what the issues that the "young kids" are dealing with nowadays.

Side note and mental check:  most of my team are in their late 20's, and/or early 30's so you're not exactly children. You're not in college anymore people, and you're not that different from me, sorry to break it to you.

BTW: think I passed the second part of my "hey, you're gonna get fired if you don't know the answers to these questions that have absolutely nothing to do with your job."

I'm in the payroll industry, btw...I hate math, and I was a journalism major in college. Life is a helluva thing. For someone who racked up thousands of dollars of debt...to have a job in payroll...without getting into details, check your paystubs, people.  And check them carefully...oh, and pay your taxes.  Because if you don't it will come back to bite you in the ass with a vengeance.

My sister's outfit:

She is either awsesomesauce or a heifer for showing everyone else out...I haven't decided yet...

Do not go gentle into that good night...

And I don't plan to, motherfucker.  Oh my god, I'm old.  I'm so old, I'm like, "what the fuck, you're over 40?" old.

No, I'm sorry.  I am not embracing the whole "grow old gracefully" theory.  I hate it.  I hate every wrinkle, every thinning and gray hair, every fat dimple on my body.

What brought this on is that one of my acquaintances in my former life in Atlanta just posted about how she turned 50...

(BTW, I love her, she is hilarious, and you should check her out...)

But still...she just turned 50.  I don't know why this struck me harder than seeing Facebook pictures of my college friends sporting gray hair and having 20 year old kids, but it did.

Maybe because she's always been a role model of mine: slightly older, always glamorous, witty, and smart, and she's accomplished what I always wanted to in life...she's being paid for her wit and humor and writing ability and is still fashionable and beautiful and stylish.

As she well deserves, because from knowing her in the "old days", she's been through her struggles as well.  And she had the guts to hang in there through the struggles, and continue with what she was passionate about and is finally successful at doing something she loves.  Writing...for a living...successfully.

I wish in my younger years I'd been more self-confident, with a higher self-esteem, and the courage to just go for it.  But I didn't.

And so now I'm here...not a terrible life, but not a spectacular one either.

Incidentally, have you ever seen the movie "Defending Your Life"?  Because it is my favorite movie of all times and pretty much sums up how I feel about my existence on this earth.

Albert Brooks...you are the only one who gets me.

Bananas in Pyjamas

So my mate Birdie is recovering from a bit of major surgery, and after reading her post, and I hope she's not offended, but it immediately brought me back to memories of this:

Mostly because she spelled it like "Pyjamas" in that wonderfully British/Canadian/Australian way.

And also because I remember weekends at my first job in Atlanta, at WUPA, way back in 1996, when the world was my oyster.  I was working the overnight shift, Master Control, as in, controlling what people saw on their TVs if they happened to be up at 7am on Saturday mornings, or up at night watching infomercials.

Those were the days.

I worked in television for quite a long time.  Hell, I went to the University of Georgia to major in Journalism and my first job in my "field" was playing country music videos overnights at a local station in Athens, GA.

I still have a soft spot in my heart for Dwight Yoakam because of this, but even more so for Lyle Lovett, because his videos tended to run for at least 8-9 minutes and would afford me a brief nap on the couch in the studio in between commercial breaks.

I miss working in television and media.  My current job is so...blah.  Just as I miss working in a big city.  Yes, there are benefits to living in a smaller Southern town: less traffic, closer to my family, more laid back, etc, but I also miss the advantages of the bigger city...and the excitement...and the making near $60k a year when I make half that now.

But life is what it is, and I've done it to myself.  And life isn't all that bad...just a little on the boring side.

But despite what it looks like, I am not complaining, because I much prefer this life to what it was about three years ago.  Every day is another step forward.

My Mood Ring(tone) Of The Day:

PS: I especially love this clip from "Little Miss Sunshine", one of my most favorite movies ever, because I totally relate to the Steve Carell character, and his line in this scene pretty much sums up my feelings about people in general if they dare to cross me or one of my loved ones:

"Those fuckers...I will kill them..."

Magnetic Personality - the video edition

Thanks to the Bloggess, I was introduced to the music of this chick who wrote this exquisite song.

Amanda Palmer is fucking brilliant. The above video led me to this one:

which I love for obvious reasons (Owaysis Roolz!)

Her style reminded me of this band:

And this song:
And it made me miss my old/young self even more.

Silence Is Fucking Golden

It's really weird, I should be used to the Rottenator being gone at night being that he works most of them, but him being gone out of town overnight is much lonelier than him being at work overnight.

And the Nooge is not so much a comforting presence as a god forsaken terror who's pretty damn lucky right now that he's too big to flush.

As I Sit Bleeding is the title of my next book.

Anyway, long day, tired, at least my feet will be happy that tomorrow is dress down day at work, hoorah!

Me: So, get some sleep, I love you.  Tell the hookers I said hey.

Rottenator:  I love you too and there are no hookers.  I'm too tired and I don't have money for hookers.

Me: So you're saying that the only things keeping you faithful to me are the fact that you're lazy and broke?

Rottenator: Pretty much.

Me: Works for me.

Who says romance is dead?

Meanwhile, Anderson Cooper is on Kathy Griffin's show tonight, and they are a hoot together, as my imaginary grandmother would say.

And Now For Something Completely Different...

Ahh, now THAT'S more like it.  This nail experience was much more successful than the last.

Oh, did you notice something else different about my hand?

Yeah...well, I forgot how much fun it was to have a kitten.

But honestly...is it possible to stay mad at something so cute?

Mmmm...yeah, yeah it is.  But he will survive to see another day. Even though if there were a custody battle, I'd totally be Meryl Streep.

Meanwhile, work, yeah, that actually is going well.  But I'd forgotten how tiring it is to have a set schedule, the M-F, 9-5 grind.  It's satisfying, but I don't feel like running errands during the week, so I save those up for the weekends so by the time the house is cleaned, the clothes are washed, and the groceries are shopped it's freakin' Sunday night and time to get back to it.

But I'm definitely not complaining.  Things are going well.  So, since my life is thankfully blissfully boring right now (knock on wood, that's the way I like it!), I have to look for drama where I can find it.  I have been overdosing on outrageous reality shows, my most current favorite being "My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding".  Have you seen this?  It is endlessly fascinating, especially being that one of the largest gypsy neighborhoods in the US is right down the street from me.  It's called Murphy's Village and lemme tell you, the houses are reDICulous!  And the Bling!

And speaking of bling, yes I'm all about Kim Zolciak and her wedding, but I think that's because I'm missing Atlanta...but I'm also watching Say Yes to the Dress...Atlanta.... yeah, there's definitely a theme...

I think I'm in love with TLC and Bravo.

Don't even think about calling it Hotlanta, poser!

It's not often I miss living in Atlanta, but every once in a while on nights like tonight, when I'm tired and pensive, which as of late, I seem to be quite frequently, I do feel a pang of regret that I'm not out, driving down 75/85, looking at the amazing skyline...

on my way to a fantastically glamorous and delicious new restaurant...

with my fabulous GBFs....

I definitely need to plan a visit sometime soon.
